Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has called for expanded access to education, healthcare, skills acquisition and decent livelihoods as part of efforts to tackle poverty and promote shared prosperity in Nigeria.
Tinubu made the call in a message to mark the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on Oct. 17, with the theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights.”
She said the day served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a society where everyone could live with dignity and hope, access meaningful opportunities and realise their full potential.
The First Lady stressed the need to prioritise vulnerable families by expanding access to essential services and economic opportunities.
According to her, sustained efforts to address poverty require compassion, effective interventions and collaboration among relevant stakeholders.
She said these measures would help create pathways out of poverty and promote shared prosperity.
Tinubu urged continued commitment to initiatives that would improve living conditions, expand opportunities and enable individuals and families to overcome poverty.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on Oct. 17 to raise awareness of the need to tackle poverty and promote the dignity and rights of people living in poverty.
