ABUJA, NIGERIA – The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has launched an investigation into a suspected chemical spill on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway following the appearance of a white, foamy substance at the scene of a road accident.

A team from the agency’s Kaduna State Field Office, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Hena Dangari Emmanuel, visited the affected location to assess the situation and commence investigations.

This was disclosed in a statement by the agency and signed by Nwamaka Ejiofor, Assistant Director at NESREA on Tuesday.

During the visit, the team met with the Police Commander for Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander for the area, and the community leader to gather information on the incident.

According to preliminary findings, a heavy-duty truck was involved in an accident, resulting in the spillage of its contents and the subsequent formation of the white, foamy substance observed at the site.

NESREA said it has collected samples of the substance, as well as soil and water from a nearby stream, for laboratory analysis to determine the nature of the material and any potential environmental or public health risks.

The agency added that it is also obtaining information from relevant officials and residents as part of its ongoing investigation.

Pending the outcome of the laboratory analysis, NESREA has advised members of the public to stay away from the foamy substance, nearby water sources and the surrounding soil to avoid possible exposure to hazardous materials.

The agency said further updates would be provided after the investigation and laboratory tests are completed.
