LAGOS, NIGERIA – As the indefinite strike by members of staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) reaches day two, domestic and international airlines are beginning to feel the impact as flight schedules and operations have been gravely disrupted.
Following the new development, Air Peace has announced the suspension of all flight operations nationwide, effective immediately.
The Head of Corporate Communications at Air Peace, Dr Ejike Ndiulo disclosed in Lagos.
According to Ejike, this decision is necessary because NiMet is the agency responsible for issuing CNH (Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather) reports, which are critical for safe landings, especially during this season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
He said that without these reports from the control tower, flight safety could not be guaranteed.
“As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMet resumes full service.
“We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize. Passengers will be contacted with updates and options for rescheduling,” he said.
InforealityNews recalls that staff of NiMET had on Tuesday, April 22, commenced an indefinite strike over the Condition of Service among other demands.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, had fixed Thursday, April 24 for a meeting with the management of the agency.
It was gathered that the agency could not provide weather briefing to airlines on Wednesday which invariably led to disruptions.
