LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) has commended the management of Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) for implementing a 40 per cent salary increase for its workforce.

The commendation came from the National President of ATSSSAN, Comrade John Ogala Ogbe, during a courtesy visit by the union’s newly elected executives to the management of SAHCO.

While praising the company for the salary enhancement, Ogbe also urged management to commence the implementation of long-service awards as provided for in the company’s Conditions of Service.

He further appealed to the management to give greater consideration to female employees when opportunities for outstation training arise, stressing the importance of inclusivity and career development.

The ATSSSAN president thanked the SAHCO management for its warm reception and reiterated the union’s commitment to constructive engagement and collaboration.

According to him, one of the hallmarks of ATSSSAN is genuine partnership with employers, particularly given the strategic and sensitive nature of the aviation industry.

Ogbe also encouraged the management to continue to place confidence in the branch executives, noting that they were democratically elected by union members and remain committed to fostering industrial harmony within the organisation.

Responding, the Managing Director of SAHCO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, described Ogbe as a passionate advocate for workers’ welfare, recalling his active role in labour negotiations during his time as a union executive at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

She praised his dedication to workers’ interests and acknowledged the shared objective of both management and labour despite their different approaches.

According to Aboderin, modern unionism must align with the realities of the 21st century and promote productivity alongside workers’ rights.

She stressed the importance of discipline in the workplace, noting that union membership should not be viewed as a licence for truancy or misconduct.

The SAHCO managing director also urged ATSSSAN to continue sensitising members on the dangers of illicit drug use, warning that substance abuse was becoming an increasing concern within society.

Aboderin reaffirmed the company’s commitment to employee welfare, stating that the recently implemented 40 per cent salary increase was part of efforts to improve staff wellbeing and motivation.

She further disclosed that the long-service award programme had already received management approval and that efforts were underway to clear existing backlogs before full implementation.
